WGirls INC, support communities to health & happiness | WEBO Power

The world is becoming a better place to live in thanks to the tireless efforts of people like Amy Heller, Founder and President of WGIRLS Inc., who have defined success on their own terms by choosing to do something ‘meaningful’.

WGIRLS INC, is non-profit organization that provides underprivileged women and children in local communities, and in times of international crisis, the support and resources necessary to achieve health, happiness and the ability to lead productive and successful adult lives.

Back in 2007, Amy had everything going for her – a good job with a leading global financial services organization, a loving relationship and an extremely supportive family. From the outside everything seemed to be going just right, but Amy felt something was missing.

Throughout her youth, Amy was blessed to have her needs met in a comfortable, stable and loving home. “I was fortunate to grow up in a household where there was structure and support – emotional, physical, financial. I was given the opportunity to further my education – to prepare myself for financial independence. I was supported in my efforts to succeed, listened to when I was hurting, cared for when I was ill. Sadly not everyone is as fortunate. This is glaringly apparent on the streets of New York. In a city of extreme wealth there is also a tremendous amount of financial and emotional poverty. People who are sick, people affected by personal financial crisis, domestic violence, children who do not have enough to eat or coats to keep them warm.”

Amy wanted to give back to those less fortunate. As the eldest of four daughters, serving disadvantaged women and children seemed a perfect fit. She posted her idea online, and the overwhelming response from women who shared her desire to help was a reassurance to her commitment. Along with five friends Amy founded the first WGIRLS chapter and began dedicating her spare time and energy to this cause. Today, WGIRLS has local chapters globally and hundreds of volunteers. WGIRLS INC is touching the lives of thousands of disadvantaged children and women through fund raising, volunteer efforts, and partnerships with other like minded organizations.

Like many women, Amy was raised conventionally; her family held the traditional expectations for her of securing a stable job and enjoying financial independence. It wasn’t easy for Amy to convince her family that starting a not-for-profit venture was the right choice simply because it would add new meaning to her life. She initially continued in her job while dedicating a lot of her personal time to WGIRLS. “It was a challenge managing multiple tasks between my job and my passion”, recalls Amy.

Amy’s recommendation for women who are considering starting a venture is: “Start small, support yourself while you work on your dream. Soon you will notice that your side project has taken a life of its own and then you are on your way.”

The growth of WGIRLS bears testimony to Amy’s efforts. She was pleasantly surprised when she first started receiving offering to start local chapters across the United States and then London. At first she was not quite prepared for such an overwhelming and enthusiastic response. Expanding from a single city to multiple cities required policies and procedures to be established, a process to exercise oversight, and called for the devotion of a lot more time and effort. Working through all of this, the organization now has grown rapidly, though systematically to it’s current size. The testimonials it has earned vouch for the change Amy and her team have brought to hundreds of lives.

It is 9 in the morning in New York as we close our conversation and Amy’s day has long begun with an even longer day ahead of her. She concludes by wishing all women entrepreneurs and business owners, including aspirants, all success. She says, “The time to DO what you want to DO is NOW. You may have a billion excuses as to why you should not be doing it right now, but do not let your fear or time constraints get in the way. If you are passionate about something, get started. Do it NOW and the Universe will stand by YOU. It will support you as you create your dream”
