Celebrating Rakhi with delightful confectioneries by WEBO members

Rakshabandhan is perhaps the sweetest Indian festival that celebrates the bonds of love. Like all Indian festivals, this is also a time of celebrating with food, especially sweets. With changing tastes and food palates, the traditional Indian sweets are making way for designer cakes, desserts and confectioneries. We bring to you three talented entrepreneurs who specialise in creating bespoke cakes and desserts that make any festival or occasion even more special.

A Wish & A Wink
Daminee Mathur and Tanya Kapur are the founders of A Wish & A Wink and they create decadent cupcakes, tea cakes, cookies and designer fondant cakes. Daminee shares, “For Rakshabandhan, we are getting many orders for cupcakes because they are small in size and you can choose from a variety of flavours like chocolate, lemon or red velvet. Especially for young boys we are doing cupcakes with ‘Angry Birds’, a soccer ball or superhero figures. We are also getting requests from brothers, so we are designing cupcakes for little girls with flowers and butterflies. For teenage girls we are also doing a range of spa cosmetics on cupcakes like lipstick, blush and little tiara.”

Daminee believes that A Wish & A Wink’s Facebook page is a great way for them to catalogue their work and reach out to friends and prospective clients. For the past two years, Daminee has also been organising summer baking workshops for youngsters that have been a huge success. She shares, “All the kids are very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about cooking and regularly watch Junior Masterchef. I believe that cooking really enhances creativity.”

Knead With Love
Richa Lulla is a self-confessed foodie who loves to eat at different restaurants and experiment with new recipes in her kitchen. Richa reveals, “Knead With Love started as a food blog. I used to write about different cuisines and food trails in Bombay. Gradually I began experimenting with desserts at home and sending to friends and family. Over the past six months I have started catering professionally.” Richa’s USP is creating mini desserts. She shares, “I specialise in mini desserts for parties, high teas, dinners etc. The concept is that each person can enjoy an entire mini dessert either in a shot glass or as a mini cheesecake.”
Richa is a mostly self-taught cook and avidly browses the internet and recipe books for inspiration. She says, “For Rakshabandhan we have received many orders for thalis. So we have created thalis with a twist. We made a gold wooden tray that has a variety of desserts and since it’s for a festival, we have made everything eggless. We have also created customised cookies with nametags of the brother or sister. I recently also made a kesar pista cheesecake, it had a chocolate and meethi boondi topping. So you have two or three sweet tastes in one bite!”
Richa feels that there is unlimited scope for variations in desserts and that the demand is huge. She opines, “One must experiment and try out new flavours, otherwise you are just a cook by the book!”

Hiral Anand is the talent behind Indulge and she specialises in making designer cakes, cupcakes, brownies as well as invitations and personalised return gifts. Hiral shares, “I have been a professional baker for the past five years. I trained at Cakes of Good Taste in London.” Hiral’s special treats for Rakshbandhan are literally selling like hot cakes! She shares, “For Rakshabandhan, our chocolate Rakhis are very popular. Along with that I am making brownie bites with “Happy Rakhi” written on them and cookie bouquets.”

Hiral believes that there has been a shift from traditional Indian sweets to customised cakes. She says, “I don’t remember giving my brother mithai for years now! Thought process and tastes have evolved.”

At present Hiral supplies from home and has a small team but she is looking to open a shop in Gurgaon very soon.
